A new technology is being explored by a Scottish company Artemis Intelligent Power. The technology utilizes a hydraulic hybrid transmission in a regular passenger car, in this example a BMW 530I. Independent tests have determined that the company was able to double the city MPG of the 530I prototype. This is a new approach but it reminds me of my February 3 post "A Hydraulic Diesel Hybrid?? The prototype also reduced the carbon dioxide emissions on highway driving by 30%.
The implications are substantial! If we could increase the MPG of vehicles by changing the transmission, over a period of time we could decrease our energy usage substantially, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and reduce our polution from automobiles. ReplyDeleteIt seems a lot of people are giving up cars & using hire ones or car clubs, such as there are in Brighton. I know in New York in the 70s .. it was the norm to hire a car for the weekends away ..
So trends to save money are on the up ..

Your right! Technology like this should be fully developed and put into production as soon as possible. This would give us hybrid like fuel economy at a much lower price.

There are a number of companies where you can get the use of a car but you only pay for what time you use. They are in the major metropolitan areas. But,they are not significant here, most people go to companies like Enterprise here. Rent a car for the day and they take you back and forth to your house.

Wow doubling a hybrids MPG could put hybrids over 100 MPG. Which now could actaully make them worth the extra cash. Great Article.

ReplyDeletePrecisely, that has been my issue with hybrids! They are expensive! Most take many years to pay for the additonal cost over a regular car. Most people do not drive a car for the period it would take to break even.
So, this technology would be a game changer! Your right - it might make hybrids cost effective also.
